Dr. Jane S. Waters
Professor
Dr. Jane is a member of the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB) and the International Union for the Study of Social Insects (IUSSI). Her research has been published in journals including Proceedings of the Royal Society B, The American Naturalist, Neuroscience Methods, and the Journal of Experimental Biology. She is active in the community, organizing with Jewish Voice for Peace and Food Not Bombs and having served on the boards of the Rhode Island Jewish Museum and the Rhode Island Natural History Survey. Dr. Jane identifies as a transgender and non-binary individual and as a member of the LGBTQ community. She lives in Massachusetts and is a parent of two young and inquisitive children who love visiting campus, catching Pokemon, and collecting ants.

Research
Our mission in the lab is to promote discovery and growth as comparative physiologists, complexity scientists, and stewards of nature and biodiversity. We study ants and other insects, exploring their natural history, collective behavior, and metabolic physiology. We strive to be an interdisciplinary and inclusive group and believe that all are welcome. Current projects in the lab inlcude clonal raider ant metabolic synchronization, needle ant communication and biomechanics, and natural history surveys of the ants of New England.
